Everyone knows about the hype going into the Super Bowl. Since the NFL has added a bye week in between the Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl, the hype has only increased. Mix this in with a 24-hour sports news cycle and you have an ever expanding hype machine set to explode each year. Because of this, we all know what’s coming. Is Tom Brady as good as Joe Montana? One day you will see Bill Belichick’s name on the Lombardi Trophy because he is the best coach ever (yes, I actually heard this…and of all places on NFL Network).
Well, lucky for us those questions have gone away because the Giants have won (and I write this only because I can’t stand over-hype of any team/player/coach). Now, normally you would think that there is just an over-analyzation to the game and how it was played. This is normal every year. Take, for instance 2009…Super Bowl XLIV. Going into the game, ESPN analysts were actually saying (on the day of the game, no less) that Peyton Manning is the best quarterback ever. Well, the Colts lost to the Saints that day. Needless to say, all of the Peyton over-hype came to a screeching halt. All you heard that day was “Sean Payton is a genius for kicking it onside”. “Why did Peyton Manning throw such a horrible ball, that eventually was picked off by Tracy Porter”.
Well, times…times are a changin’. To loosely quote my buddy Bob. All the hype has now switched over to the Giants side. Now Eli Manning is being lifted up into the stratosphere by the sports media. They want to compare him to all-time New York greats such as Ruth, Mantle, Jeter (I know…I don’t get that one either), Reggie, etc. Can we just calm down a minute? Seriously, do we have to always over-hype every freaking thing that happens? I mean, I understand people asking the question/making the statement of should Eli/Eli should be in the “elite class” of quarterbacks of today. But, now we’re supposed to put him up against the greatest of the greats of New York players? Players that are a part of the all-time elite sports players of any sport? Now can you see why I absolutely hate the hype machine in this country. Let’s just take a step back, take a deep breath and calm down a minute.
On another note, the sports world is slowing down now that the NFL season is over. Posts are going to slow down too. I want to keep this blog good and the posts worth coming to read. I will make 3-4 posts each week. I can promise you, if there is big/breaking news, I will definitely do a post. Heck, if there is enough good things to write about each day of the week I will do that. I just don’t want you all to come here and have to read about the type of chalk LeBron James uses before each game. So, keep checking in. Sign up for email alerts and look at my Facebook Page and Twitter feed. I will let you guys know each time I make a post.
