And in other sports…

24 Jan

I refuse to write about the Super Bowl for 2 straight weeks (which is what the NFL is going for with a bye week in between the Conference Championships and the Big Game). So, for this whole week, unless there is earth-shattering news, this is going to be a Super Bowl free zone. Since the news in the sporting world is pretty thin right now, I’ll be talking about other sports leagues/news. We’ll even discuss the NFL, just nothing about Super Bowl XLVI. That will be held up through at least the end of the week. So, no talking Super Bowl until the end of the week, ok? Ok.

The “breaking news” today was the Naval Academy joining the Big East in 2012. Does anyone see this as a desperate move? Look, I love the Naval Academy, but please, this does not help their automatic qualifier that they are so desperately (and rightfully so) trying to hold onto. If the Big East continues on this path, I can see the BCS yanking the automatic qualifier in the not-so-distant future.

On another front, it looks like Tampa Bay wants to go college. They were, and could still be, talking to Jim Tressel. Recently, they almost hired Chip Kelly of Oregon but he turned it down. Does Tampa know what they are doing? I would say no. Leave a comment about who you feel Tampa will hire as their next coach and let us know whether they should/shouldn’t hire an NFL coach or an NCAA coach.

That’s all for today. I will try to drum up a headline for tomorrow so I can get more traffic.

I don’t think Tressel will end up in Tampa. As I said on our 01/04 episode of Happy Hour, I’ve felt all year that Tressel would end up taking over the Colts. They gave him a weak job in the booth and I feel that was just to get his feet wet in the organization. He’s very old school on offense and would desperately need a top-notch offensive coordinator – unless, of course, Peyton Manning stays. I mean, what does an OC really do with Peyton on the field? But, alas, I don’t think they keep Peyton and his $28 M, along with what Luck’s contract demands at #1. With RG3 probably going off the boards before #6, I’m hoping the rumors of Peyton to Washington come true.
The Chip Kelly thing was shocking. He’s a great head coach in college, but why would anyone want him as an NFL coach? He’s just not that type of guy and runs a college-only offense. He probably asked the same question and turned it down on that merit. This just proves that the Tampa front office is filled with people who are just clueless. That is why I’m still holding on to my 01/04 prediction of Brad Childress taking over the team. I think he’s a great offensive mind, but a horrible head coach. I my opinion, their best option would be Todd Haley, but the way things are going there, I doubt they grab what most would consider the “best” option. Those are my predictions and I’m stickin’ to it!
